Ilorin Emirate Descendants Demand Abolition of Kwara Land Use Act

Date: 2012-12-13

Ilorin — The Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU) yesterday canvassed for the abolition of the state's Land Use Act to allow for peaceful coexistence in the state. The union said in a statement at a public hearing on government policy on land acquisition organised by the state's house of assembly. IEDPU in a paper presented on its behalf by a legal practitioner and member of the union Alhaji Yahaya Kale Sa'adu, said abolition of the Act would check against indiscriminate acquisition of lands by government. He alleged that several customary lands in the state have been sold by the state government without informing or paying compensation to customary lands owners and condemned the urbanization of native areas in Ilorin by the state government. Speaker of the state House of Assembly Rasaq Atunwa, who declared the public hearing open, said it was aimed at collating views of the people on the state's urbanization law. In his submission, Director-General of the state Bureau of Lands Mr. Tope Daramola said the bureau has not acquired any land in the state without abiding with the laid down law on land acquisition in the state. He said the bureau has not acquired the Ilorin Eid praying ground and the Emir's palace as being speculated in some quarters, also denying insinuations that the bureau acquired lands for building of religious houses in any part of the state.
